- Those looking to examine new perspectives on family dynamics

What is Family Constellations?

Bert Hallinger is the founder of Family Constellations. He is a German Psychologist who in the 1950’s observed Indigenous Zulu communities and how they resolved conflict. He observed that love in family systems flows when 3 laws are followed:

  1. The deep need to feel a sense of belonging

  2. The importance of social order in your family system

  3. The importance of reciprocity, the balance of giving and receiving

Family Constellations helps you to reflect on how your family story is impacting you now. It brings our internal conflicts outside of us and allows us to see new information from the 'knowing field’. The power of gathering in circle allows us to hold our challenges with tenderness whist staying in connection.

What happens during a Family Constellations Workshop?

Initially, we take time to arrive and settle in as a group. This involves an introduction to Family Constellations and explaining the format for the day. We introduce ourselves and share our intentions. We participate in group activities that introduce us to the concepts of working with the phenomenological method of inquiry by using all our senses as we step into the ‘knowing field’. No prior experience is needed.

When we have slowed down enough, and all feel embodied and present as a group, we will identify someone who feels ready to explore a piece of work. They may share a question or a few sentences about an issue that bothers them. Together, we will decide who and/or what will be represented in their constellation.

There are three important roles that support a constellation.

  1. The participant - who initiates the inquiry for a piece of work around themselves or their family system

  2. A representative - who agrees to step into the field, being a representative in the constellation

  3. A group member holding space in the circle - there is power in coming together as compassionate witnesses

Regardless of your role, you will be influenced by the work as it unfolds. Every piece of work is unique, and we all benefit from connecting with the group’s collective consciousness.

Throughout the workshop, we will explore multiple pieces of work. It is not necessary for you to be a participant, as holding space for someone else’s experience can be just as valuable.
